Hello Dawn,
Welcome to ultra running. I found that it is a progression of stupidity :)
My plan has worked very well for me. It sounds like you are well on your way to calling yourself an ultra runner. I have a few articles about core training, but not an actual plan: <a href="http://www.hawaiianshirtray.com/training-exercise/core-strength-training-exercises/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Core Strength Training Exercises</a> and <a href="http://www.hawaiianshirtray.com/training-exercise/stretching-flexibility/" title="Stretching and Flexibility: To Stretch or Not to Stretch" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Stretching and Flexibility: To Stretch or Not to Stretch</a>
Which 50 mile race are you racing?

Hi there! I really like the looks of this plan. I am a newbie wanna-be ultra runner! I'm doing my first 50k next Saturday. I just recently finished a 24 hour endurance run and complete 100k !! YAY! I have one more 50k trail run in August then a 50 miler at the beginning of September. I noted the importance of core strength you've mentioned, do you have a 'plan' for that as well? I find I do better if I have everything on a calendar. Anyway..thank you :)

Ray, thanks for your race report from the Rocky Mountain Double Marathon. They've turned it into the Rocky Mountain 50k this year (2013), which is what I'll be running on 5/26. There aren't too many race reports out there for this course, so I appreciate reading yours. I imagine they'll extend the course for the 50k and make it an out/back. Basically, though, it should still be the fun downhill outbound, and tough slog uphill inbound. I may try your 40 step method on the hills coming back. If that works for me, I may give it a shot on other ultras as well.

Hello Lou,

What a great story. I look forward to hearing how your training comes along. It sounds like you have the right mental mind-set to get across the finish line of an ultra! It also sounds like you are training smart and not doing too much too soon which will lead to injuries. The back-to-back long weekend runs are key for me. Good luck and let me know when you sign up for the 50 miler!

Thanks for stopping by to take a look at my training program. Sure, you can switch the Saturday and Sunday runs. I do it all the time. Which 50k's are you running this year?

Thank you for the plan. I have run 3 50k races and am getting ready for my first 50 miler. Since the miles on Saturday and Sunday are pretty similar can I switch them? As a mom of 5, Saturday's are better for longer running times. I really like the idea of running based on time instead of distance, mentally it's not as daunting.

I'm also thinking of trying a 50 miler. I haven't run a marathon since 1986 and an currently managing some two hour runs on the weekend. I'm not interested in running a marathon for time, but an ultra? I like the idea of just trying to finish, using walk/run as a strategy, walking up hills and getting to eat while running. I've converted all of my training to walk/run and was able to manage three hours on Saturday and two hours on Sunday then ninety minutes on Wednesday. Legs were a little tired, but not sore or hurting. I'm going to try the run/walk strategy in a fall marathon then pick a 50 mile event for 2014. By the way, I turned 60 last November. I'm excited by this new challenge and encouraged by your website. Thanks.

Hello Gabe,
I swear by these ginger bread cookies. Here is the link to the recipe which includes the amount of crystallized ginger you can use: http://www.hawaiianshirtray.com/recipes/gingerbread-cookies-hawaiian-shirt-ray/ If you are only making one batch every now and then I would recommend just buying the crystallized ginger from the spice section of your local grocery store. I usually make a batch and then put them in the freezer. Then I just take out what I need for races. I hope these work for you as good as they do for me.

Thanks
